Turkey blocks Sweden's membership in NATO, following developments which Ankara considers blasphemous. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that Sweden should not expect support from his country for NATO membership, following weekend protests in Stockholm.

Tensions between the two countries come after some protesters in Stockholm burned a copy of the Koran and in another demonstration hung upside down a mannequin with the face of President Erdogan.

Erdogan said burning the Koran was an insult to everyone, especially Muslims. He also criticized the Swedish authorities for allowing the protest to take place in front of the Turkish embassy.

"It is quite obvious that those who allow such blasphemy in front of our embassy cannot expect our support for their NATO membership. Sweden's government doesn't need to tell us about rights and freedoms. If you really respect rights and freedoms, you should first respect the Republic of Turkey or the religious beliefs of Muslims. If you don't show that much respect, I'm sorry, you can't have any support from us, as far as NATO membership is concerned," Erdogan declared.

Turkey has been angered by permission given to Rasmus Paludan - a radical Swedish-Danish politician whose anti-Islamic actions sparked riots in Sweden last year - to stage a protest outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

Following the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership. But they need approval in the Turkish Parliament to join the Western military alliance.

But Ankara has presented several demands to Sweden, such as the extradition of people it accuses of terrorism or who were part of the failed military coup of 2016.

Turkey argues that Sweden has not done enough to suppress Kurdish groups, which Ankara sees as "terrorists".
