Italian police have arrested Andrea Bonafede, the surveyor who allegedly lent his identity to boss Matteo Messina Denaro
He is accused of having ties to the mafia. In addition to giving up his identity card to allow him to obtain a false document and to provide him with the health card necessary for the therapies and medical examinations to which the mob boss must undergo, Bonafede bought the house in Campobello di Mazara where Messina Denaro spent the last period of his escape, gave him the ATM that allowed him to do some shopping, and forced him to buy the car in which he was traveling.
The car, bought personally by the godfather a year ago at a Palermo dealership, was officially registered to Bonafede's mother. And also the surveyor's mother, an 87-year-old with disabilities, gave him a registered Fiat 500 in exchange for the purchase of the Giulietta.
According to the investigators, the surveyor Bonafede was a support element for the fugitive Messina Denaros. "He made an important contribution to the criminal dynamics of the mafia clan in the province of Trapani, thus allowing Messina Denaro, not only to maintain his secrecy, but above all, through his presence in the territory, to continue exercise the leading role of the mafia organization", writes the investigating judge Alfredo Montalto in the measure of security ordered.
