A Washington resident has died after contracting bird flu, a strain previously only found in animals. It is the second case in the US in 2025.
The patient was hospitalized earlier this month and tests conducted by the University of Washington revealed that he was suffering from the H5N5 strain of the bird flu virus. The discovery was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading public health agency in the US.
"The risk to the population remains low," the authorities assured.
They say there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus. The patient reportedly had a poultry farm in his backyard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded more than 70 human cases of bird flu in the US this year.
A patient died in January in Louisiana after being infected with H5N1. The World Health Organization (WHO) has counted over 1,000 human cases of bird flu since 2023 in 25 countries, regardless of strain.
