Putin as a "rockstar" among the crowd in Dagestan

Vladimir Putin is consolidating support in Russia after the short-lived rebellion of Wagner's mercenaries. He was received like a "rockstar", and even posed for "selfies" with young fans, in a rare interaction with the public, which fueled speculation about a possible relationship.

Putin was on a visit to the city of Derbent in southern Russia's Dagestan region when he put on an impressive performance for the crowd like a Hollywood actor on the red carpet. Seemingly relaxed and re-energized after avoiding a civil war last week, the normally stoic and reclusive president approached the crowd, shaking hands and getting a kiss on the forehead from a teenage girl, who pounced on him and asked for a photo with the first of Russia. Commenting on the event, some analysts say that it is becoming impossible to believe that there is only one Putin.

"How can the security of the president be preserved in such conditions. Something is wrong here. It looks like a theatrical performance where Putin is not really Putin," said Viktor Alksnis, a Russian analyst.

Even pro-war nationalist in Russia and former FSB colonel Igor 'Strelkov' Girkin expressed his conviction that it was Putin's double who brought him closer to the crowd in Dagestan. But another explanation could be that the Kremlin chief traveled to the remote Caucasus region, to a city where the president's visit is a big event and the crowd would be very enthusiastic.

The man who once wrote Putin's speeches, Abbas Gallyamov, points out that Moscow's number one needed such an image now, where he was surrounded by people, that he had forgotten about Covid and social distancing.
