Ukraine peace plan/Zelensky: US offers security guarantees for 15 years
Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States has offered Ukraine security guarantees for a period of 15 years, with the possibility of extension. Zelensky made this statement yesterday in an interview with Axios.

The Ukrainian president also said he is ready to put US President Donald Trump's plan to end the war to a national referendum if Russia agrees to a ceasefire of at least 60 days. According to Zelensky, a "60-day ceasefire to organize and hold the vote" is the minimum necessary, as such a referendum would entail major political, logistical and security complications.

Zelensky believes that the best solution would be to put the entire 20-point plan to a referendum. He also added that if citizens did not go to the polls for security reasons, the referendum result could be illegal.

According to the Ukrainian President, most of the elements of the bilateral agreements between the US and Ukraine have already been agreed upon, although some "technical aspects" remain to be discussed further. According to Axios, one of them is the duration of the agreement: the US has proposed a 15-year renewable pact, while Zelensky believes that Ukraine needs more than 15 years of security guarantees.

Trump: "We have a good chance of resolving the conflict in Ukraine"

On the other hand, President Trump believes that there are good opportunities to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

"I think we have a good chance of making it," Trump told the New York Post, quoted by the Russian agency Tass.

"I've solved eight wars, and this is the hardest of them all. But I believe we will make it," Trump said.
According to the newspaper, the American leader appears optimistic about the possibility of reaching a peace agreement during his upcoming meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, scheduled for tomorrow. According to him, both sides are interested in ending the conflict.

"I think [the Kiev government] wants to do it now, and I think Russia wants to do it too. But every time one side wants it, the other side doesn't," Trump said.
