President Donald Trump said the United States was prepared to launch a second attack on Venezuela if necessary, although he added that it was no longer necessary at the moment.
Trump also issued a direct warning to leaders allied with Maduro.
"The U.S. military remains in position, and the United States maintains all military options until our demands are met. All political and military figures in Venezuela must understand this: what happened to Maduro can happen to them, and will happen if they are not fair, even to their own people ," Trump said.
Trump said Maduro's departure marked a turning point for the country.
"The dictator and terrorist, Maduro, has finally disappeared from Venezuela. The people are free. They are free again. It has been a long time for them, but they are finally free ," he said.
Trump said the US embargo on Venezuelan oil remains in effect after the capture of Nicolás Maduro and added that giant US oil companies will invest billions of dollars in Venezuela's devastated infrastructure, while issuing a stern warning to other political and military figures linked to the regime.
Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida that the United States is maintaining economic and military pressure on Venezuela while he assesses next steps.
"It is very important that the embargo on all Venezuelan oil remains in full force. The U.S. military remains deployed and the United States maintains all military options until the United States' demands are fully met ," the president said.
