Renowned American judge Frank Caprio, known for his compassion in the courtroom, has passed away at the age of 88.

The former Providence County District Court judge was suffering from pancreatic cancer, and the day before his death, he posted a video on social media in which he spoke from his hospital bed.

"Last year, I asked you to pray for me, and I know you did, because I went through a very difficult time," Caprio says. "Unfortunately, I had a relapse. I'm back in the hospital now, and I ask you again to remember me in your prayers. I believe strongly in the power of prayer. I believe that the Almighty who is above us is watching us, so please remember me...", he says.

Caprio has served for four decades in the Providence District Court and was appointed judge in 1985. He won the hearts of the public through the television series “Caught in Providence,” which was nominated for the prestigious “Daytime Emmy Award” in 2021. Clips from the courtrooms where he listened carefully and compassionately to the stories of citizens went viral on social media.

In January 2023, Caprio announced his resignation, and at the end of that same year he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

"Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people. Through his work, he touched the lives of millions and left behind a profound legacy of kindness and justice. He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but also as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend," the family said in a statement.

In his honor, the family calls on everyone to spread more compassion – just as he did every day of his life.
