"Where the hell did that come from?" McGonigal's ex-girlfriend

The ex-girlfriend of former senior FBI official Charles McGonigal, Allison Guerriero, has told the story of their relationship at the time when the latter was married with children.

Guerriero has revealed important details from their relationship that lasted about a year, as he talks about their dates and the lavish gifts he gave her.

Excerpts from her story to Insider:

One morning in October 2017, Allison Guerriero noticed something unusual on the floor of her boyfriend's apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn: a bag full of cash. There, next to his shoes, next to the futon, was the kind of bag that liquor stores give out. Inside were stacks of bills, large clippings tied with rubber bands. It didn't look like something he needed to carry around. After all, her lover, Charles F. McGonigal, held one of the highest and most sensitive positions in the FBI.

"Where the hell did that come from?" she asked.

“Oh, you remember that baseball game?” McGonigal replied, according to Guerriero's recollection. "I placed a bet and won."

McGonigal was married and had two children in high school. He also referred to his wife as "ex-wife". He returned there once or twice a month. But McGonigal had led Guerriero to believe that he was either divorced or soon to be. She didn't question his story, nor did she question the story about the bag full of money.

A few days earlier, Guerriero had sat on the couch with McGonigal in a room to watch McGonigal's Cleveland Indians beat the Yankees.

Much later—after Guerriero's cancer diagnosis, their separation, and McGonigal's retirement from the FBI—McGonigal would be charged on suspicion of, among other things, accepting $225,000 in cash from a former agency employee. of Albanian intelligence. That total includes $80,000 that was allegedly delivered to a parked car outside a restaurant on October 5, 2017. October 5 and 6 were also the days the Indians beat the Yankees in the first two games. Today, Guerriero no longer believes the bag of money contained winnings from a sports bet.

One of McGonigal's attorneys, Seth DuCharme, declined to comment.

Guerriero was 44 when they met, a former kindergarten teacher who volunteered for law enforcement causes and worked as a contractor for a security company while living at home with her father. McGonigal, then 49, had just started his new job at the FBI's New York office.

Guerriero says their relationship lasted just over a year. McGonigal's rent in Brooklyn may have been modest, but he lived quite well. He hung out with Guerriero at high-end restaurants. He often gave her gifts. He once took her to see New Jersey Devils hockey games at a private club. She recalls that McGonigal once gave a hundred-dollar bill to a street vendor. "I'm a little better than him. I can save a hundred bucks,” Guerriero recalled telling McGonigal, astounded.

That October day wasn't the only time Guerriero remembers McGonigal carrying large amounts of cash. She had previously met with federal law enforcement officials. She knew not to ask too many questions about the job. "Charlie McGonigal knew everyone in the world of national security and law enforcement," Guerriero said in an interview with Insider.

"He deceived everyone. Why should I feel bad that he was able to deceive me too?", she said.

The dual indictments filed against McGonigal earlier this week in New York and Washington, D.C., are the culmination of a grand jury investigation that Insider exclusively reported on last year, and allege fraud and corruption. But Guerriero says McGonigal's shenanigans extended beyond his duties as counterintelligence chief and into their personal lives. Two sources who knew McGonigal and Guerriero in New York told Insider that they believed Guerriero's account of the relationship, including her claim that McGonigal had led Guerriero to believe he was effectively single.
