The impact of the war on the exchanges of Albanian farmers with Ukraine

Albania and Ukraine realize about 40 million US dollars of trade exchanges per year, where an important place is occupied by agricultural products. After the start of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, Albanian exporters are facing many challenges in this regard. The risk of war, the withdrawal of local traders and rising costs has made transportation more difficult. Our correspondent Raimond Kola was in Lushnja, the area with the largest agricultural exports in Albania.

After an export shortfall of almost two weeks, trade exchanges are returning to areas in Ukraine where no fighting is taking place.

Exporters of agricultural products in Lushnja are in full swing with seasonal vegetables. In Savër of Lushnja, Nedret Arapi, one of the largest exporters of vegetables in Albania, says that recently exports have returned to Ukraine.

"The activity was blocked a few days after the war in Ukraine started and some trucks were returned to us after they had left for Kiev. We had some small losses but thinking about the war that was being fought there we forgot our losses, we mobilized again and started exporting to some areas where there was no war. "

Ms. Arapi says that with Ukraine as an eastern country trade exchanges have gone quite well the last 5-6 years. About 10 to 20% of the company's exports go to this country every year, says Nedreti. She herself has shown solidarity with helping the people of Ukraine by donating a truck with agricultural products.

"Relations with Ukraine have been very good because with the countries of the East we have had the same mentality. We liked the cooperation both them and us, because Europe is more difficult. "Through the Embassy of Ukraine in Albania, I sent as a sign of free solidarity a truck with seasonal vegetables, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber and strawberries."

Director of Agricultural Services in Lushnja Andrea Muça says that agricultural exports to Ukraine have been and are very important as this country has also served as a distributor of Albanian agricultural products in other Baltic countries.

"Our farmers export almost all over Europe. "But Ukraine has been and is very important because we have a direct relationship, because the products that the Ukrainians received did not only serve Ukraine but they also served as distributors in the Baltic countries."

For the period January - March of this year exporters say that there is a slight increase in exports but according to them the difficulties have increased with transport which from about 3,000 dollars that has been per truck due to rising fuel prices and uncertainty in Ukraine has gone to about $ 4,000.

For exporters also important is the support of farmers as competition as Ms. Arapi says is quite tough with countries in the region.

"You have competitors in Spain, you have Turkey, you have Greece, the competition is very strong. "It's a lot of work being done by exporters and it needs to be supported."

According to the data of the Albanian Ministry of Finance in 2021, the trade volume of Albania's exchanges with Ukraine was over 42 thousand tons with a value of about 40 million dollars.

Most of the trade exchanges were imported in about 37 thousand tons and exports in about 5 thousand tons.

Albania exported to Ukraine in 2021 vegetables, ferrous metals, nuts and shoes worth over 3 million dollars and imported, mainly, metals and cereals and edible oils worth about 37 million dollars.

Official Albanian data show that during 2021 Albanian exports to Ukraine marked a decrease of about 28% compared to 2020 due to the pandemic situation./VOA
