Ukraine's military accuses Russian forces of blowing up a large dam in the Moscow-occupied Kherson region in the south of the country. At least eight different settlements in the region have already been flooded, a local military official said.

The bombardment of the Nova Kakhova dam at night risks major flooding and the evacuation of thousands of civilians whose lives are at risk has begun. Built in 1956, it is 30 meters high and the reservoir contains about 18 cubic km of water.

Its damage and destruction, for which Kiev and Moscow blame each other, could lead to the flooding of the surrounding area, including Kherson, retaken by the Ukrainians in late 2022.

About 22 thousand people are in the "critical zone" on the right bank of the Dnieper controlled by Ukrainians. The dam and its reservoir guarantee water supply to Crimea, annexed by Russia since 2014, and to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, as well as feeding the Kakhovka hydropower plant. The dam is also of great strategic importance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council about the Kakhova dam, which, as reported by Kiev, was blown up by the Russians.

Adviser to Ukraine's Interior Ministry, Anton Gerashchenko, announced on Telegram that evacuations of surrounding villages, which fall within what has been designated as the "danger zone" of flooding on the right bank of the Dnieper, have been ordered. The population is also called to turn off electrical devices.

As a result of the bombing, the upper part of the Kakhovka hydropower plant was destroyed, said the head of the administration of Novaya Kakhovka Vladimir Leontiev. The water level in the city as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydropower plant has risen by 2.5 meters. There is currently no need to evacuate the civilian population from Nova Kakhovka.

Meanwhile, Moscow has announced that it rejected a large-scale military operation in Donetsk and killed 880 Ukrainian soldiers in 24 hours. The response from Kiev was very close, describing Moscow's version of the counter-offensive as delusional.

Zelensky claimed success in leading Bakhmut.
