Malaysia resumes search for flight MH370

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will resume on December 30, nearly a decade after the plane disappeared with 239 people on board, local authorities say.

The new search, which will continue for 55 days, began in March but was suspended due to bad weather.

"The latest development underscores Malaysia's commitment to comforting the families affected by this tragedy," the Transport Ministry said.

Flight MH370, a Boeing 777, disappeared in 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and sparked the largest search in aviation history.

The search company Ocean Infinity is leading the search under a "nothing, no money" deal. If the plane is found, it will receive $70 million.

Previous efforts have included an international search involving 60 ships and 50 aircraft from 26 countries that ended in 2017 and a 2018 search by Ocean Infinity that ended after three months.

Flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic control less than an hour after takeoff on March 8, 2014, and radar showed it had deviated from its course.

It remains one of aviation's greatest mysteries, haunting the families of the passengers. Over the years, many have called for a new investigation, saying they are struggling to find solace.

The incident has also sparked conspiracy theories that the pilot may have deliberately crashed the plane or been taken hostage. A 2018 investigation found that the controls were intentionally manipulated to divert it off course, but there were no other conclusions.

Investigators said that "the answer could be definitive if the plane is found."
