The Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu, is on the verge of being dismissed from the post, which he has held for 16 months. He took office in a surprise manner in July 2024, while he was reconfirmed in September 2025, in the "Rama 4" government. A few months after this reconfirmation and after the breakdown of the balances within the majority, this Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku has been taken into custody, Vengu is on the verge of leaving the post.
Sources from the Council of Ministers told the VoxNews editorial office that Minister Pirro Vengu has had strong clashes with Prime Minister Edi Rama. The latter has persistently asked him to sign an arms contract, which will be won or more precisely will be taken to the "table" by some of the Prime Minister's partners, but Vengu has refused. So far, he has "vetoed" not to sign, given that some of his associates are under indictment by SPAK. The fear of a possible investigation and the filing of charges against him have made him step back.
Rama's ultimatum is coming to an end and very soon, if he does not sign, he is expected to be dismissed from office. But, even if he signs, he has said "open the prison", since several ministers, senior directors, mayors or deputies within the majority are in prison, others are defendants, some with security measures and many are under investigation.
SPAK has created a long list of officials it has convicted, are in court or under investigation, while Pirro Vengu is not far behind, who has so far "played defense". His two predecessors, in the same position, Olta Xhaçka and Niko Peleshi, have been investigated, the first for the military bases that were given to private companies and the second for the failed fleet of firefighting aircraft. Meanwhile, the current Minister of Defense's desk has another priority, armaments!
The policy of the United States of America, Israel or Europe itself has focused on increasing the capacities of NATO countries to defend themselves. There has been a strong demand for increased funds, while the military industry is quickly becoming very profitable. And, since Albania is a NATO member country, although we do not even have a proper army, weapons and everything else, the government has approved several decisions and normative acts to increase funds and invest.
But, as in many other priority areas, preferred firms and names have begun to "flourish". At the center of the entire scheme in Albania is the KAYO company, which was quickly established to produce weapons, clothing or even military equipment. Several "alliances" have been formed, while it has been insistently requested that millions of euros be channeled to several foreign businessmen, highly "preferred" within the majority and by Prime Minister Edi Rama himself.
Rama has been persistently asking Pirro Vengu to favor one of them. It is a huge arms contract that is destined to go to this "partner". So far, Vengu has been "protected", but who knows for how long?!
The relationship between Rama and Vengu has deteriorated, despite the fact that the two have collaborated for a long time. The 39-year-old, born in Elbasan, has been part of the majority since 2013, while also holding the position of Chief of Cabinet at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then, for two years, 2017-2019, he was on the close staff of the Prime Minister himself, holding the position of Director of Anti-Corruption at the Prime Minister's Office.
After this task, in 2019 Vengu was appointed as director of the Port of Durres, a task he held until July 2024, when he was appointed as Minister of Defense, a task he still holds to this day, but not for many weeks! Because of these tasks, which are extremely important in Albania, international partners have spotted and documented all of his activities. In these tasks, the 39-year-old is suspected of having allowed illegal activities, and during his "reign" at the Port of Durres, cocaine trafficking flourished.
