Barack Obama's close relationship while he was president in the White House with then-Vice President Joe Biden was not as friendly as it appeared in public.

This is how the New Yorker journalist Gabriel Debenedetti's book reveals about the relationship between the two men, which still had moments of tension even after Obama left the White House.

In the early days of their relationship, Obama considered Biden an old-school man who spoke loudly — if not offensively — and at length.

Over time, the relationship between the two men had improved, but the mistrust had not subsided. In 2010, the book says, Obama considered running in the 2012 election with Hillary Clinton as his running mate to boost his re-election hopes. Biden was clearly disappointed to learn of this development.

But Biden has also been the man to say he's not one to flatter Obama, explaining that "my manhood is non-negotiable."

Another point of friction was which of the two first announced his support for same-sex marriage, which was legalized by the US Supreme Court in 2014. Obama advisers accused Biden of rushing to to do so first, denying the president a chance to be the first to make a historic announcement himself. "He can't control his loud mouth," they said of the vice president.

Six years later, in 2020, Obama reluctantly indicated his support for then-presidential candidate Biden, as he believed that a bid by him would be "unimaginably painful."

A hesitant friendship

The two men met when Biden was already a senator from Delaware and Obama, the rising Democratic star who had stunned the 2004 convention by hinting that he would run for president.

Obama was eventually elected senator that year, but as colleagues now the two probably viewed each other with skepticism.

Biden disliked the new faces and was annoyed by the press coverage of Obama. However, he suggested they talk about it over dinner at a casual Italian restaurant. Obama countered by suggesting they go somewhere better because his pocketbook could handle it, according to him (always by the book), a conceit that didn't sit well with the seasoned senator.

Their partnership on the Environment and Public Affairs Committee (not one of the Senate's biggest) gave Obama the opportunity to think of Biden: "An honest man, but one who talks non-stop," Obama reportedly told close colleague David Axelrod. And he believed that the generation of senators like Biden was responsible for making Washington ineffective.
