Matteo Messina Denaro, described as the boss of bosses in Cosa Nostra in Sicily, was arrested two days ago while visiting a private clinic in Palermo, a few meters from the police station.
But now that after three decades the most wanted man in Italy and not only has a certain profile, the most famous mafia organization needs a new leader.
His profile is not simple, since potential candidates have not only been hiding for years, but even though Cosa Nostra has already split into dozens and maybe hundreds of families that control smaller and smaller territories, cooperate with each other, but are more and more skeptical about genuine leadership.
Messina Denaro was perhaps the last personage to connect the traditional mafia associated with bosses like Toto Riina and Bernardo Provenzano with today's so fragmented situation.
According to Italian anti-mafia authorities, in 2018 the largest families had tried to replace Messina Denaro, who did not come from the Palermo area that has always dominated Cosa Nostra, with boss Settimo Mineo, who was arrested shortly after, something that still kept the Messina Denaro in force.
"Because - the new prosecutor of Palermo, Maurizio de Lucia, has explained several times - the Palermo clans would never accept to be led by a non-Palermite. Even more so a Trapani". They attempted to restore the leadership Dome that disappeared from Toto Riina, but with the arrest of Settimo Mineo this dream was extinguished.
Today's candidates identify with some elements of the older generation and some ambitious young people.
The first is Giovanni Motisi, or known by the nickname Pacchione, "the old man", who has been missing since 1998 and if he is alive, he would be around 60 years old. The boss of the Pagliarelli clan, Motisi began his career as the favorite killer of super boss Toto Riina.
From the older generation there is also hope for Stefano Fidanzati, of the eponymous clan who control the Cosa Nostra drug trade, building an empire that stretches beyond Palermo and Sicily, and has bases in Milan and overseas.
Among the young people, Giuseppe Autieri stands out, raised under the shadow of the boss Calogero Lo Presti, the treasurer of one of the richest clans of Palermo.
Sandro Capizzi, the son of the boss Benedetto Capizzi of the clan of Santa Maria di Gesu, the clan of Toto Riina's great enemy, "prince" Stefano Bontate, one of the most interesting characters of Cosa Nostra, massacred in 1981, also stands out among the young people. from the Corleonese clan.
If there will be a new boss of Cosa Nostra it will be one of these, but it is too soon to tell. But one thing is certain: the men of honor will not give up the ancient dream, the revival of the Dome.
