Valery Zaluzny

Volodymyr Zelensky's most serious potential opponent remains Valery Zaluzny, according to foreign media.

Zaluzny, born on July 8, 1973 in Novograd-Volynskyi, a city with strong military roots, Zaluzny has built a career marked by meritocracy in the Ukrainian military and decisive leadership on the battlefield. He studied at the National Defense Academy of Ukraine and the Ostroh National Academy, receiving a master's degree in International Relations.

Zaluzny served as Chief of the Armed Forces from July 2021 to February 2024 and was a central figure in the reform of the Ukrainian armed forces, bringing them into line with NATO standards and moving them away from Soviet-era military doctrines.

His tenure coincided with the escalation of the Russian invasion in 2022 and was critical to the country's defense. Known for his adaptability and realism, he introduced strategies that allowed greater autonomy for frontline units, allowing for faster reactions to Russian advances.

Zaluzny's leadership earned him the nickname "Iron General" in Western media, underscoring Ukraine's resilience and strategic acumen. In March 2022, Zelensky promoted him to the highest military rank, that of general. Despite his differences with Zelensky, Zaluzny was recognized with the title Hero of Ukraine for his contribution to the war.

After leaving the military leadership in 2024, Zaluzny was appointed Ukraine's ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ukraine's permanent representative to the International Maritime Organization. His role, according to the British newspaper The Guardian, places him at the center of Ukraine's vital Western alliances at this critical stage of the ongoing war.

For Ukraine, the elections will be either a step toward normalization or an accelerator of crisis. If they succeed, they will put the country back on the right track toward institutional normality. If they fail, they will reinforce the narrative of internal destabilization.
