New chapter between Scholz and Macron: Long dinner and selfie in the German
Scholz and Macron

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz accompanied French President Emmanuel Macron on an impromptu walk around the center of Potsdam before a long working dinner.

It is the first time that Scholz has met a foreign leader in the city where he lives.

Potsdam is located near Berlin.

Scholz showed Macron around the center of Potsdam during a walk of more than half an hour.

They met at the Alter Markt square, sat outside the Barberini museum cafe and also strolled through the Freundschaftsinsel, a nearby park.

The meeting was also significant because the German chancellor and the French president initially did not get on well with each other after the new government took office in Berlin in December 2021.

The relationship was not entirely easy.

The dinner in Potsdam lasted almost three hours, much longer than planned.

However, it was not entirely private, as delegations from both countries were also present, but Scholz and Macron sat at a separate table.

It was considered possible that the two may have spoken about Russia's war against Ukraine, but also about European issues such as the European Commission's proposals for a reform of debt rules, a particularly contentious topic between Germany and France.

Macron and Scholz had just met last week at the European summit in Moldova, where they launched a joint mediation effort in the conflict in Northern Kosovo.

Dozens of curious people stood in the square near the "Neuer Markt" and saw Scholz and Macron as they entered the "Koczimmer" restaurant.

Last year, there were many disagreements in Franco-German relations.

A joint cabinet meeting even had to be postponed to the autumn due to many differences.

On the 60th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty of Franco-German friendship in Paris in January, the two sides tried to cooperate.

The joint Council of Ministers that had been postponed was also held.

The fact that the German chancellor invited the French president to Potsdam - practically to his house - can be understood as a tactic to soften the still tense relations between the two countries.

The "Koczimmer" offered rich cuisine in a historic atmosphere and is one of Potsdam's oldest and most traditional inns since 1783.

The restaurant's chef, Jorg Frankenhäuser, who also won a Michelin star this year, offers "new Prussian cuisine".

Macron plans to return to Germany again in early July.

During a three-day state visit from July 2 to 4 at the invitation of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Macron is scheduled to visit Ludwigsburg, near Stuttgart, as well as the eastern city of Dresden.

According to the agenda, Macron will have breakfast alone with Scholz.

A large state banquet is planned at Steinmeier's home in Berlin's Bellevue Palace.

This is the first state visit by a French president to Germany in 23 years.

"This special event marks the beginning of a new chapter in the decades-long friendship between the two countries," said a statement from the German president's office and the Élysée palace in early May.
