German Chancellor: Europe is not at war, but not at peace either!

"We are not at war, but we are not at peace either," this is the declaration that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made yesterday, underlining that the world is experiencing fundamental changes .

Speaking at an event organized by the Rheinische Post newspaper, Merz said that the rules-based international order is being replaced by the politics of brute force, which is often accompanied by military violence.

"We live in a completely different world," the German chancellor said, Reuters reports.

Merz also made no secret of his concern about recent drone flights over Denmark and the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

He said that while there was no indication that the drones were armed, they were equipped with surveillance systems and had a wingspan of up to eight meters. "We don't know yet where they are coming from, but suspicions are turning to Russia," he said.

Dealing with this threat is complicated, as Germany is densely populated, Merz continued, explaining that shooting down an eight-meter drone poses risks.

"It could crash in a yard, in a kindergarten or in a hospital. We have to be really careful" in any handling, the German chancellor said, adding that the best approach would be to prevent such drones from entering European states' airspace in the first place.
