Israel on Sunday formalized its rejection of what it called "unilateral recognition" of a Palestinian state and added that a possible deal should only be reached through direct negotiations.

The day before, the Israeli prime minister declared that it made no sense to continue talks with Hamas. Talks brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States have so far failed to bring about a pause in the fighting in Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the stance through a statement, which he submitted to a vote during a meeting of the government cabinet, which unanimously approved it.

"Due to the new ideas of the international community about an attempt to unilaterally impose a Palestinian state on Israel, today I am presenting for approval by the government a decision-making statement on this matter. I am sure that it will be widely accepted", Prime Minister Netanyahu announced.

The official statement reflects Israel's stance on what it calls the imposition of a Palestinian state.

"This is the statement: Israel categorically rejects the international dictate regarding a permanent agreement with the Palestinians. Such an agreement will be reached only through direct negotiations with the parties, without preconditions. Israel will continue to oppose the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. "Such recognition after the October 7 massacre would give terrorism an extraordinary and unprecedented reward and prevent a future peace agreement," Mr. Netanyahu read from the official statement.

The Israeli Prime Minister had expressed earlier on Saturday that there was no point in continuing the ceasefire talks in Gaza and called the demands of Hamas "hallucinations".

Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that, at the request of US President Joe Biden, he had sent negotiators to the ceasefire talks in Cairo, but that the talks have stalled.

Hamas released a statement on Saturday blaming Israel for the lack of progress in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas says it will only accept a complete cessation of hostilities, Israel's withdrawal from Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons.

Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said that although the past few days have not been promising, he remains optimistic.

Talks mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States have so far failed to produce a pause in the fighting.
