French police were shocked to discover that the man they had caught speeding in a red Ferrari was officially a poor and homeless person.

When traffic police in the Vaucluse region stopped the driver for speeding in his red Ferrari Portofino series at almost 250 km/h, the officers did not expect that he was homeless and had no declared income in his name.

During questioning, the well-dressed man told officers he had no job, assets or income. It's not every day that French police stop a sports car worth around 200,000 euros, but a car driven by a homeless person? Fortunately, that never happens.

And yet this happened, after a quick check revealed that the person behind the wheel of the Ferrari had been receiving welfare for years. Asked who the car belonged to, the driver stated that it belonged to his mother, but records showed that the vehicle was registered to a real estate company, managed by the suspect, his mother and two siblings.

A subsequent investigation uncovered a complex scheme to embezzle state funds and evade taxes by hiding income. The driver and his family lived a luxurious life, with expensive purchases and trips to luxury destinations.

Meanwhile, “on paper” they had declared themselves unemployed and unable to pay their bills, thus benefiting from financial assistance from CAF (the French family assistance fund). Despite considerable profits from the real estate business, none of the income had been declared or taxed.

In total, the fraudsters are suspected of embezzling at least 1.8 million euros in social assistance, in addition to another 1.6 million euros in undeclared income. The family was arrested after a series of raids and will soon be tried in Draguignan for “undeclared work, money laundering, misuse of company assets and fraud.”
