The first and only one in the world, the 13-year-old recovers from deadly brain

When Lukas was diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumor at age 6, there was no doubt about the prognosis.

French doctor Jacques Grill still gets emotional when he remembers having to tell Lucas' parents that their son would not survive. Lukas is now 13 years old and has no trace of the tumor.

A Belgian boy is the first child in the world to recover from brain glioma, a particularly aggressive cancer, according to the researchers who treated him.

"Lukas overcame everything to survive," said Dr. Grill, head of the brain tumor program at the Gustave Roussy cancer center in Paris.

The tumor, whose full name is diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), is diagnosed each year in about 300 children in the United States and up to 100 in France.

Ahead of International Childhood Cancer Day, the medical community has hailed advances which mean 85 per cent of children now survive more than five years after being diagnosed with cancer.

However, the outlook for children with DIPG tumors remains poor, with most not living a year after diagnosis. A recent study found that only 10 percent lived another two years.

Radiotherapy can sometimes slow the progression of an aggressive tumor, but no drug has been shown to be effective against it.
