Hungary opposes the European Commission's plan to give more money to Ukraine and Budapest is not ready to contribute additional money to finance the costs of managing the EU's debts, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told state radio on June 30 .

Orban, speaking on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels, said it was a "ridiculous" request from the Commission to ask Hungary to contribute additional money when Budapest - along with Poland - have not received funding from the Fund. EU recovery due to disputes over the rule of law.

The EU will give Ukraine an aid package of 50 billion euros for the period 2024-2027, the bloc announced on June 20. This decision comes after the review of the common EU budget for the period 2021-2027, which has been spent on the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis. High inflation and high interest rates have also doubled utility costs.

"One thing is clear, we Hungarians... will not give more money to Ukraine until they say where the funds of 70 billion euros that were before have gone," Orban said.

"We consider it ridiculous and absurd that we have to contribute more money to finance the debts due to the cost of services, from which we have not yet received the funds due to us," added the Hungarian Prime Minister.

Hungary and Poland are the only EU countries that have lagged behind in benefiting from recovery funds.

The European Commission has blocked these funds due to accusations that the nationalist governments of these two countries have damaged democracy and the rule of law./REL
