A British mother has expressed her despair after her daughter, Mia O'Brien , a law student from the United Kingdom, was reportedly sentenced to life in prison in Dubai.
According to her mother, Danielle McKenna, the 23-year-old made a "very immature mistake" and got involved with the wrong company, which led to her imprisonment in the United Arab Emirates.
McKenna, 46, has launched a fundraising campaign to cover legal costs and travel to visit her daughter.
“Mia has received a life sentence and is now in central prison,” she writes.
" As you can imagine, as a mother I am absolutely devastated. I have not seen my daughter since last October. Mia is only 23 years old and has never done anything wrong, but unfortunately she got involved with some wrong friends and made a very immature mistake, for which she is now paying the price ."
The family has not provided details about the crime Mia was convicted of, but UAE authorities typically hand out life sentences for drug trafficking, serious violence, terrorism and human trafficking.
In the Emirates, a life sentence usually translates to 15 years in prison.
The British Foreign Office (FCDO) warns tourists that there is zero tolerance for drug-related offences, including even small amounts, which can result in large fines or imprisonment.
A spokesperson for the FCDO confirmed that British authorities are supporting Mia's family and are in contact with local authorities in Dubai.
Danielle McKenna also said that the funds raised will be used for legal expenses and visits to Dubai, noting that no one from the family has seen Mia since last October./ Taken from Yahoo.com
