The rescue of the crew member of the American fighter jet that was shot down in Iran was made possible thanks to a coordinated operation between intelligence and special forces, in which the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) played a key role, while the final order came from Donald Trump.

According to Axios, which cites US officials, the weapons systems officer survived after parachuting from an F-15 jet and managed to evade capture for more than a day in the mountainous areas of Iran.

The situation turned into a race against time, as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was also searching for him.

Behind the scenes, the CIA undertook a deception operation, spreading false information inside Iran that the officer had already been found and was leaving the country by ground means.

In parallel, the agency used advanced capabilities to pinpoint his exact location.

After identifying the officer's position, the CIA relayed the information to the Pentagon and the White House, which led to the decision for immediate intervention.

President Trump, who watched the operation from the White House Situation Room, gave the order to launch the rescue mission, Axios reports.

The operation was carried out by American special forces with strong air support.

According to Axios' sources, US aircraft struck Iranian forces to keep them away from the area where the officer was, while commandos intervened to remove him from enemy territory.

US officials have called this one of the most daring search and rescue operations in the country's military history.

Rescuing the crew of a downed aircraft is one of the most complex and urgent operations, known as combat search and rescue (CSAR), for which the US military and its allies prepare.

Air units that conduct CSAR missions include some of the most trained and specialized members of the military.

Missions are often carried out by helicopters, which fly at low altitudes over enemy territory, accompanied by other military aircraft that carry out strikes and patrol the area.

In his social media post, Trump said the pilot, a colonel, was "behind enemy lines in the dangerous mountains of Iran, being pursued by our enemies, who were getting closer and closer every hour."

The president added that his location was being monitored "24 hours a day" by senior US officials who were planning the rescue operation.

Earlier, Iran had stated that it wanted to find the missing American alive and had offered a reward for citizens who would help find him.

The crew of a downed plane is specially trained for such situations.

"Their number one priority is to stay alive and avoid capture," Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at the think tank Defense Priorities, told the BBC.

"They are trained to, if they are physically able and not so injured that they cannot move, leave the drop site as quickly as possible and hide so that they are safe."

They are also trained in survival techniques, so they can cope with a lack of food or water, or find resources in the field, for as long as possible, Kavanagh added.

Where and when did the plane crash?

Iranian state media initially reported on Friday that the country's forces shot down a US drone in southern Iran. The exact location remains unconfirmed, but two provinces have been mentioned: Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, as well as Khuzestan.

Two people were on board. The pilot was rescued in an earlier operation, which reportedly involved an A-10 Warthog that was shot down over the Gulf, with its pilot parachuting before being rescued.

A helicopter carrying the rescued pilot from the F-15E aircraft was hit by small arms fire, injuring crew members, but managed to land safely, US media reported.

The IRGC also said that nomadic tribes in the mountains of Iran shot down two Black Hawk helicopters that were part of the American rescue mission.

BBC Verify has confirmed a video from Friday showing three gunmen firing at at least two Black Hawk helicopters.

Iran's top military command attributes the downing of the US jets to new air defense systems, according to the state news agency IRNA.

It is not known exactly what brought down this American plane, but if it was hit by the Iranians, the most likely cause is a surface-to-air missile (SAM).
