Sergei Sokolov, the editor-in-chief of the well-known and independent Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, was arrested in Moscow on Thursday, following accusations that he allegedly "contempts" the Russian armed forces, the newspaper reported.

Officials from Russia's Center for Combating Extremism handcuffed Sokolov, Novaya Gazeta said.

According to the newspaper, the charges - which are "administrative" and are usually punishable by a fine or a short prison sentence - relate to an article in the printed newspaper.

It is not known when the hearing against Sokolov will be held.

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders wrote on the X social network that it protests against his arrest, "which is further evidence of the violence of censorship in Russia."

Sokolov became head of news at Novaya Gazeta in September 2023, after then-editor-in-chief, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov, was declared a "foreign agent" by Russian authorities.

In September 2022, a Moscow court revoked the license of Novaya Gazeta, which has been critical of the Kremlin for many years.

Days after President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine two years ago, the Kremlin-controlled parliament passed legislation that makes it illegal to disparage the Russian military or spread "false information" about the country's actions in Ukraine.

Dozens of independent media outlets in Russia were banned as a result, while other outlets said they would not report on the war in Ukraine.

Novaya Gazeta announced in March 2022 that it would suspend work during the war in Ukraine. But Novaya Gazeta staff, who fled the country, started a new project, Novaya Gazeta Europe, which is vocally critical of Russia's occupation of Ukraine.
