US President Donald Trump welcomed Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with a special ceremony on Tuesday.

As the BBC writes, this was a meeting filled with sensational statements, promises of dizzying investments, and discussions on sensitive political and regional issues.

The meeting was accompanied by an extraordinary welcome ceremony, which included a flight display of F-35 and F-15 aircraft.

"The prince knew nothing about Khashoggi's murder"

During a discussion with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump stated that Prince Mohammed bin Salman "knew nothing" about the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. This statement contradicts a 2021 US intelligence report, which concluded that the prince had approved the operation.

Trump also added that Khashoggi himself was "extremely controversial," noting that many people "didn't like him."

The Saudi prince, for his part, said he feels "pain" for the families of the September 11, 2001 attacks, while regarding Khashoggi, he said it is "painful" when someone loses their life "for no reason."

Saudi investments, from 600 billion to 1 trillion dollars

One of the hottest topics at the meeting was the economy. Prince Mohammed bin Salman confirmed that Saudi investment in the US would reach $1 trillion, up from a previous pledge of $600 billion.

Trump publicly praised this commitment, calling it "extraordinary" and a guarantee for job growth in the United States.

Discussions on the nuclear deal and F-35 jets

The US president stated that he sees it possible to reach a formal civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, although it is "not urgent."

He also reiterated his willingness to sell advanced F-35 fighter jets to Riyadh, a controversial move that could change the military balance in the region.

The deal could change the military balance in the Middle East and test the US commitment to maintaining the "qualitative military advantage" of Israel, which has so far been the only country in the region to possess F-35 aircraft.

In addition to military equipment, the Saudi leader is seeking security guarantees, access to artificial intelligence technology and progress on an agreement on the civilian nuclear program.

Abraham Accords, Saudi Arabia ready to join

The prince said his country is interested in becoming part of the Abraham Accords, but only if there is a clear path towards a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

Trump added that they had a "very good conversation" on the subject and that a defense agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia is "almost" finalized.

At the joint press conference, there were also tense moments when Trump was asked about the files of financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump reacted sharply, telling the reporter:

“I think you’re a terrible reporter… and a terrible person.”

He reiterated that he has no connection to Epstein and called the case "a Democratic hoax."

Meanwhile, a senior official confirmed that Al-Nassr team captain Cristiano Ronaldo will appear later at the White House, a detail which is attracting considerable media attention.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman called the visit "a major new chapter" in the partnership between the two countries, emphasizing cooperation in politics, economics, security and the military.

Trump, meanwhile, described the prince as "a man respected by all" and "the future of the kingdom."
