Archaeological monitoring, during the works for the construction of the high school "Gjergj Kastrioti" in Durrës, brought to light the traces of a mosaic.
The discovery is among the most important finds in recent years in this city. The mosaic contains geometric and floral figures, realized with extremely high quality. The composition and quality of the work rank it among the rarest mosaics found so far in the Balkan region.
Based on the current condition in which it was found, it is thought that the surface of the mosaic is about 30 square meters. Along with the mosaic, wall structures built with bricks bound with lime mortar, decorative elements, such as fragments of columns, wall painting, ceramics of daily use, etc., have been discovered, which show that we are dealing with a villa of the period Roman.
Preliminarily, it is thought that these archaeological findings together with the discovered mosaic belong to the period between c. I - II AD. The continuation of excavations is expected to provide a clear panorama of the archaeological site, more complete information on the construction period and its extent. The whole process will be under the full coordination of the Ministry of Culture, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, UNDP and archeological specialists.
