We are fed with imported goods, domestic production runs away

The import of vegetables and fruits deepened further in April this year, as domestic production in greenhouses entered its peak.

Data from INSTAT show that the import of greens in value increased by 73 percent in the first 4 months of 2024 compared to the same period a year ago. There was also a 25 percent increase in the import of fruits in the same period.

On the other hand, exports of greens recorded an annual increase in value by 12% in January-March 2024, while fruits recorded a decrease of 5.5%.

The export of vegetables in value was 4.2 billion ALL January-April 2024 and their import was 2.1 billion ALL.

Experts in the agricultural sector claim that developments within the sector are consolidating agriculture into large farms, while farming of plots and small herds is heading towards extinction.

Previously, small family farms supplied the domestic market, while greenhouses produced mainly for export. All greenhouse farmers with surfaces above 2 dynam are related to export, while small greenhouses and field products are coming and being reduced as a result of the reduction and aging of the population in the rural areas of the country.

Farmers' markets that used to sell agricultural and livestock products almost no longer exist, causing many farmers to turn from producers to consumers. The growth of tourism on the other hand is increasing the need for seasonal fruits and vegetables, influencing the expansion of demand and more imports in this category.

Albania still has a surplus in the trade of vegetables, but imports are growing rapidly compared to exports, signaling very quickly that we will be in deficit.

The data shows that the growth of greens imports became more aggressive on December 6 of last year and in January 2024. In December 2023, greens imports increased by 80% compared to the same period in 2022, and also the import of fruits for the same period increased by 55%. This trend is still high in April, even though the domestic production season for greenhouse greens is at its peak.

Overall, food imports have increased significantly this year. A part of domestic production is being replaced by imports. The created situation has encouraged higher prices in groups that are not produced in the country. Experts warn that the reduction in production exposes the country to external crises and monopolies of import groups.

Tourism stands a good chance for agriculture if its consumption is linked to local production. Among other things, tourists look for traditional recipes based on local produce. But it is clear that with the current developments in agriculture, our products run the risk of meeting the demand of tourists, causing the latter to become the cause of increased imports.
