According to INSTAT estimates on the labor market, it results that for the age group of 15 years and older, 49.0% of employees are employed with a salary, 29.7% are self-employed and 21.3% are unpaid workers in the family business.
"Scan Intel" has analyzed the number of self-employed to see the changes that this category has marked in the span of one year, but also to analyze the characteristics of this group. According to the data, in 2023 there are 393,603 self-employed people, from about 408 thousand in 2022. So, we have a decrease in the share of self-employed by 1.8 percentage points, from 31.5% in 2022, to 29.7% in 2024.
If we analyze the characteristics of the self-employed in the 15-64 age group, the data show that about 4.2% are self-employed with employees against a salary. On the other hand, 24.6% are self-employed without employees against a salary.
As for unpaid workers in the family business, the figures speak of a figure of 21.3% in 2023, falling compared to 2022. Analyzing the labor market from a gender perspective, it is found that women are 1.4 times more likely than men to be unpaid workers in the family business. The estimates obtained from the INSTAT survey show that 27.2% of employed women and 16.3% of employed men are unpaid family workers.
In 2023, the percentage of informal employment in the non-agricultural sector is 26.2%, decreasing by 2 percentage points compared to 2022.
Despite the fact that the number of the self-employed has decreased, their weight in the employment structure remains high. In the previous analyzes of "Scan Intel" it appears that Albania has the highest rate of self-employment in Europe. Concerns about this rate may be related to the fact that most do not pay social security, thus reflecting later on the pension rate.
