Counties that saw the biggest decline in cattle by 2023, the factors behind

The decrease in the number of livestock (cattle) according to the districts reveals elements related to the shrinking of the population and the restructuring of the economy from agriculture to other sectors.

INSTAT data show that the biggest decrease in cattle in 2023 compared to 2022 was in the County of Durrës with -30.8%, Elbasan with -21%, Kukës with 19% and Korçë with 17.2%. In these counties, the contraction was greater than the national average of 11.5%.

The lack of labor force in the big cities where the tourism and industry businesses are concentrated is increasing the gravity of the departures from the agricultural sectors to others.

For example, in the hotels of Durrës, the demand for employees is increasing more and more, causing women who previously lived by breeding animals, now work in hotels.

Also in Tirana, construction companies are getting more and more employees from the surroundings of Tirana who were previously engaged in agriculture and livestock. Rising wages in tourism and construction are attracting more and more workers from agriculture, which offers lower wages than other sectors of the economy.

In some counties, the decline in the number of cattle is due to the decline of the population in rural areas and its aging. For example, in Kukës, which is a mainly livestock district, the small farms with 1-3 cows are closing due to the aging and reduction of the population in the village.

For the same reasons, the number of cattle is also falling in Korça, experts in the sector claim.

Heads of cattle increased only in the district of Gjirokastra and Fier by 1.3 and 2% each. In Fier, there was a slight recovery in large farms after a sharp fall in cattle in 2022.

From 2014 to 2023, the biggest decrease in the number of cattle was in Elbasan and Gjirokastër with 65 and 54% each.

During this period, the head of cattle has been halved throughout the country. This has been coupled with the decline in milk production that has created a strong increase in dairy prices in recent years.
