Economic assistance covers only 25 percent of family consumption. Fewer families

In 2023, about 55,410 families benefited from the economic assistance scheme, a number that has been decreasing from year to year. As a result of the record inflation figures in recent years, the increase in the cost of living and the extremely small value of the economic assistance, the latter fails to cover the family consumption necessary to meet the needs.

From a UNICEF report, it appears that the measure of economic assistance covers only 25% of family consumption. Meanwhile, according to statistics published by INSTAT, for the period from the beginning of 2019 to the end of 2023, the average monthly economic assistance for a family is 86 thousand ALL.

The People's Advocate, Erinda Ballanca, stated that the average economic aid for last year alone was 70 thousand ALL from 55 thousand ALL in 2022, thus marking a small improvement.

"In Albania, the economic aid in its average value, i.e. the average that Albanian families receive from our entire social policy, does not exceed the value of 7,000 ALL, while before it was 5,500 new ALL per month per family."

The increase in the amount of economic aid after the pandemic was not long-lasting, so efforts must be increased to provide greater support to families in need.

"The economic needs of families are such that they are not addressed by the social policies we have had. At the time of the pandemic, the government became more aware of the need to address aid issues and actually doubled all aid amounts. This was a positive social policy, but we couldn't keep it in force any longer."

The Economic Assistance Program has a limited impact on reducing the risk of poverty. The most recent data show that the rate of risk of falling into poverty is 37.8% for the unemployed and 28.9% for the economically inactive compared to 12.7% for the employed.
