Lending, which sectors are the biggest borrowers?

Banks have increased financing of businesses in all sectors of the economy, but the highest growth is observed in the trade sector. Credit to this sector increased by 13%, double the growth rate observed in the second half of 2023.

Referring to the data of the Bank of Albania, within the trade sector a contribution similar to last year of the tourism branch and an increased contribution from the transport branch can be observed.

Meanwhile, the industry sector also had a positive impact on the growth of the loan portfolio for businesses, whose growth rates of 10% brought the contribution of this sector back to positive ground. Within this sector is the manufacturing industry branch, which gained the most financing from banks.

Likewise, bank financing for construction sector businesses has been positive and stable. Credit to this sector increased by 6%, a rate similar to the average of the second half of 2023. Credit to the agricultural sector showed double-digit growth of 12%.

Although increasing, its contribution to the growth of credit for businesses is almost negligible. In its analysis, the Bank of Albania notes that these developments in the business loan portfolio are generally in line with the economic activity in the country.
