This Wednesday, May 6, a funeral ceremony will be held in honor of the former Speaker of the Parliament, Servet Pëllumbi, who passed away the day before at the age of 89.

According to the official announcement, the coffin will arrive at 09:00 at "Skënderbej" Square, from where it will then be placed in the lobby of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Tirana.

Tributes in honor of the well-known public figure will begin at 09:30, while state tributes will take place at 12:00.

The funeral ceremony, which will be held with state protocol, is scheduled for 12:30.


Then, at 1:00 PM, the funeral procession will depart from the Opera and Ballet Theater towards the Sharra cemetery, where his burial will take place.

Klan News journalist Greta Bullari reports that two speeches are expected to be given at today's ceremony. The first speech will be given by the son of the former head of the Assembly, Arben Pëllumbi, and another speech by one of his closest friends, Namik Dokle.

Who was Servetus the Pigeon?

Known as "the professor" in socialist circles, he was one of the most well-known figures of politics and intellectual thought in transitional Albania.

He was one of the voices that often called for reform and reflection within the Albanian left.

He was born in 1936 in Korça. He attended higher education at the University of Saint Petersburg, where he received the title of Doctor of Sciences in literature.

He trained as a scholar of philosophy and worked for many years in universities and scientific institutions. During the period of Enver Hoxha's regime, he was part of the academic and ideological structures of the time.

After the 1990s, he was elected as a deputy in the first pluralist parliament and participated in the transformation of the ALP into the Socialist Party of Albania.

As vice president of the opposition Socialist Party, he led several battles, including the demand for the release of Fatos Nano from prison.

He is known as one of the longest-serving members of parliament among the Socialists, and he concluded this commitment in the years 2002-2005 by leading the Albanian Parliament.

After the removal of the Socialists and Fatos Nano from power, he gradually withdrew from active politics and engaged in writings, analyses, and reflections on democracy and the Albanian transition.

He was decorated with the title "Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg" by former president Alfred Moisiu.
