Without yet being resolved the issue of the massive collapse of the Qukës-Qafë Plloçë road at the exit of the tunnel, another segment of the national axis inaugurated in September has suffered extensive damage.

A section of the sidewalk near the village of Geshtenjas on the Pogradec-Qafë Plloçë axis has completely collapsed. Along with the sidewalk collapse, it is reported that underground networks have also been damaged, while the roadway is also at risk.

Although it passes through residential areas, this axis has been without lighting for months, seriously endangering the lives of pedestrians. According to data, the reconstruction of the road, the widening of lanes, the installation of traffic dividers, sidewalks and the lighting system were completed as an investment in September 2018.

The Qukës-Qafë Pllocë axis cost around 260 million euros and was completed after 14 years, but only two months of use were enough for the road to become inoperable. The massive collapses show that the quality of the works is quite poor and that proper geological studies on the stability of the soil have been lacking in the field.

The repeated collapses raise serious doubts about the road's design, supervision and quality of construction. The road, which was trumpeted as a strategic investment that would connect the West with the East, is turning into an example of mismanagement of public funds for its construction.

For the tenders held for this segment, SPAK is investigating former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku.
