"Political Theater" - Israeli Ambassador to Albania: Gaza Flotillas

Israel's Ambassador to Albania, Galit Peleg, has reacted to the recent movements of naval flotillas aiming to break the siege of Gaza.

In a response, Peleg writes that the image presented in the media of these activists as courageous humanitarians collapses before any minimal verification, characterizing these trips not as aid missions, but as pure public relations campaigns to condemn Israel.

Peleg emphasizes that if the real goal were humanitarian aid, these groups would utilize the legitimate, coordinated international channels that have been operating since the beginning of the war, through which Israel facilitates the passage of food and medicine after scanning the shipments to prevent the entry of Hamas weapons.

“There is another obvious avenue for help: the Egyptian border. Yet surprisingly few of these activists show any enthusiasm for confronting Egypt over its restrictions. Why? Because challenging Egypt doesn’t generate headlines. It doesn’t feed the preferred global narrative. It doesn’t help demonize Israel. That’s the real point. Flotillas aren’t designed to deliver supplies. They’re designed to provide images,” the ambassador writes.

The diplomat also raises serious questions about the financing of these campaigns, citing documented evidence that networks linked to Hamas supporters in Europe and governments that supported the October 7 terrorist attacks have poured money into these organizations.

According to her, this activity is fueled by the same ecosystem as aggressive anti-Israeli demonstrations around the world, which under the guise of solidarity with the Palestinians often hide ideological hostility and anti-Semitism.

In her reaction, Peleg does not spare public figures or European leaders who remain silent out of political fear of voters' reaction on social media, while taking as an example the transformation of environmental activism into a means of gaining attention.

“Greta Thunberg is a striking example of this phenomenon. Once seen as the face of youthful environmental idealism, she has increasingly become attached to simple political campaigns that reward performance over substance. Her transformation reflects a broader problem: activism has become less about solving problems and more about virtue signaling,” Peleg points out.

The ambassador argues that this type of "political theater" diverts attention and financial resources that could go towards the real reconstruction of hospitals, infrastructure, and the economy in Gaza.

To truly help civilians, Peleg calls for the international community to invest in legitimate regional structures, stop the romanticization of performative extremism, and put pressure on terrorist organizations that use citizens as human shields, making a clear distinction between true humanitarianism and propaganda.
