Earning bread with spears, pensioners in Durrës do handicrafts for tourists

"I have been going home penniless for a week. I myself am without a pension, because I worked in the black and my husband is disabled with a pension of 85,000 lek. How does a family live with 85,000 ALL, because children have their own lives?" said Marie Ndoja, pensioner.

Marie Ndoja is 65 years old, but economic difficulties have made work an integral part of her life.

She, together with several other retired women, in winter or summer, whenever time permits, sit on the sidewalk near the post office in district no. 13 in Durrës and work with spears.

 "We get this in Kosovo. About 2 euros went there. I will work by hand, for 2 days if I can, because I have no strength, age takes its toll," said Marie Ndoja, pensioner.

 "The daily average here is 3,000 per day," said Marie Ndoja, a pensioner.

 "We have been out for 1 week and have not sold anything. We come here, see each other and hang out," said Marie Ndoja, pensioner.

The summer season is "golden time" for them, because only then are their works sold.

 "They take the tourists and leave. How many tourists are there, how long will they stay? Yes, we will eat everyday. Medicines are needed, how can we get them?"

While they count pennies as profits, they face the municipal police every day.

 "At the point of the sun, even the police won't let us. I will push that cart from the beginning to the end, I will run away with it, until the police leave," said Marie Ndoja, pensioner.

 "Our problem is that they don't let us enter a country, so that we can sell. Yes, not 400,000 ALL, because I don't even get that much for 3 months," said Marie Ndoja, a pensioner.

Therefore, they only need a special place where they can work quietly.

 "The state should not only see the youth, let it turn its head from us who are of the third age. We also want to eat like others, live like others, we do not seek luxury. We want to go out without fear here. How many are like me, why not do something for us? That's all I ask for myself," said Marie Ndoja, a pensioner. Marie says that they have also addressed this request to the city municipality, but they have not yet received a solution.
