A survey conducted by the International Republican Institute finds 9 out of 10 Albanians assess the high level of corruption at all levels of government as the main challenge of living, while 8 out of 10 identified high prices.
More than half of the respondents, or 53 percent of Albanians, believe that the mayors are doing little or nothing to address the needs of the people and the community.
Despite these concerns, the survey also found that 78 percent of respondents believe that democracy is the best form of government. Furthermore, 73 percent declared that they will vote in the upcoming local elections on May 14
"The results of this survey underline the importance of dealing with economic issues and corruption while preserving and strengthening democratic institutions in Albania," said Paul Mçarthy, IRI's Director for Europe.
"It is essential that government leaders at the national and local level work together to create opportunities for Albanians to build a better future," he continued.
