In recent days, in Durrës, there have been more graffiti with content of hate speech. They appeared mainly at the Dajlan Bridge crossing, which is the main entrance to the coastal city and the beach area.
It is not the first time that messages inciting national and regional hatred and division have appeared on the walls of the flyover.
"This phenomenon has been happening for years, here for 5 years every beginning of the season and it is no coincidence that there are the same graffiti, writings and insults. It is someone's hand" - says Bledar Çakalli, mural artist.
Public spaces are being used by unknown people to create a not-so-good climate on the eve of the tourist season. Çakalli, an artist known for his murals in Durrës and Tirana, expresses his concern about the situation and demands a response not only from the local authorities, but also from the community.
"This is not what real Albanians do. There are also reactions on social networks. It is something that stands out. We have complained, yes, and we must bear some responsibility. The solution is not only to complain, but also to act" - says Çakalli.
Asked where they complained about the cases, he answered "to the municipality and the police."
Although the civic response to hate speech is few, it is not absent. Some young people have tried to erase the inscriptions, while Bledari, through a message, invites everyone to contribute by turning into art and positive messages the surfaces where the language of hatred and division prevails, which is a criminal offense and punishable by imprisonment by our criminal code.
"Hate speech is not a solution and we will try to turn it into art and give the right messages. Now is the tourist season, we have taken the initiative and with a minimum fund of 200 euros to start, and anyone who wants can join us" - says the artist.
It is worth noting that some of the writings contain insults for Kosovo, and some others make regional discrimination. There are even slogans that read: "Kosovo and Serbia are one"./Tch
