An abandoned backpack with cocaine revealed drug trafficking to Italy

It all started with an abandoned backpack discovered on the side of the highway by the police.

Some drug traffickers on the run had thrown it out of the window, but then, seeing that there were two packages of cocaine of one kilogram inside, they returned and took it, finding the Seriate Traffic Police at the scene.

Six years have passed since then, during which an investigation was carried out between Italy and Albania into drug trafficking between the two countries, which ended with a final tally of 119 people arrested and 26 denounced.

The last operation took place on Thursday morning, with the execution of 43 arrested persons, among whom are also 4 brothers from Albania who lived in Brescia. In addition to the security measures, an asset valued at 4,068,340 euros was also seized.

In the Bergamo area, Albanian drug dealers were arrested in Terno, Azzano, Ponte San Pietro, Albano, Sarnico, Dalmine, Stezzano (where a pistol was also found), plus an eighth who lives in Monasterolo but was caught in Brescia .

According to Italian media, they are people considered to be of medium caliber in the organization, who often changed accommodation, were able to move kilograms of drugs and supply small dealers.

An investigation had been developed precisely for those two packages abandoned along the highway, which became more and more complex from stage to stage.

The Brescia agents started by identifying the supplier of the packages, still in March 2017, finding that he brought the drugs from Albania.

Subsequently, two cocaine and heroin refineries were identified in Cremona and Milan, where the drug arrived at 90% of its quantity and was then processed.

As in a chain, it was passed from one discovery to another: the police had arrived at another criminal group of four Albanian brothers, living in Palazzolo sull'Oglio, from there to a cocaine trafficker between Bergamo, Milan and Trento and then to two other Albanian brothers, who ran the cocaine trade.

At that stage, the investigators had intervened when one of them, in Terno d'Isola, had just handed over two kilograms of cocaine to a Moroccan, who was found to have 100,000 euros in cash.

Ingenious double trunk systems had been discovered in big-engined cars in which drugs were hidden: one was in the wheel arch, one behind the license plate and opened with a key mounted under the steering wheel, and a third that was unlocked only by the use of a magnet.

Therefore the investigation was increasingly expanded and since 2018, it was coordinated by a joint investigative team between the Prosecutor's Office of Bergamo (with prosecutor Claudio Marchisio) and the Albanian judicial authority, SPAK. Despite the difficulties caused by the long stoppage of the Covid 19 pandemic, the investigation continued.

Over the years, investigators between Albania and Italy discovered an Albanian criminal organization consisting of twenty-one people who managed drug trafficking to Northern Italy (one of these groups dealt with distribution in drug trafficking squares, such as in Rogoredo). , but from Italy, the traffic continued to Switzerland and Germany.

Precisely from this investigation against this organization and thanks to environmental interceptions (which were not directly related to the case), in Albania there were also arrests for corruption, such as that of the former deputy minister of the interior, Rovena Voda, and a prosecutor in Kavajë, Edmond Karriqi.

The criminal group was tracked only by the Albanian network, while those operating in Italy were supplied from whatever they could.

The final evaluation of the operation resulted in the execution of 119 security precautions, the seizure of over 120 kilograms of Dutch-made cocaine and 15 kilograms of heroin (both very pure), 92 kilograms of hash and 129 kilograms of marijuana, the seeds of which were imported in Italy for cultivation in greenhouses on two farms, in Mantua and Modena. Also, assets and financial resources totaling 5,068,340 euros were seized.

"Bergamo is confirmed as one of the drug crossroads for other destinations as well," comments the deputy prosecutor of Bergamo, Maria Cristina Rota. - The operation is of great importance from the point of view of numbers, but an Albanian-Italian cooperation with a constant exchange of information was important. This is important, because drug traffickers have no barriers."
