In Tirana, the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime called today the son of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Shkëlzen Berisha, as a witness for the "Gërdeci Case", where 26 people lost their lives, about 15 years ago.
"I think that knowledge has not helped the investigation in question, as I have nothing to do with this matter. I have repeated all that I have said publicly. I came to respect the law like any citizen. But I am impressed by the fact that the same prosecutor's office, the same prosecutors and with the same case 15 years ago, declared that they did not consider my call reasonable", said Shkëlzen Berisha.
He stated that he has nothing to do with the incident, with which he attached a document from the Ministry of Justice, where his name was recorded. Former ministers Aldo Bumçi and Fatmir Mediu were also questioned by SPAK and called it a forged document.
SPAK reopened the case of Gërdec 9 months ago and these days confirmed to the former minister of defense, Fatmir Mediu, the accusations of abuse of office in cooperation.
On March 15, 2008, 26 people, including children, died in an explosion at the ammunition dismantling department in the village of Gërdec, while over 250 others were injured.
The Special Prosecutor's Office was set in motion, following the request of the parents of 7-year-old Erison Durdaj, one of the victims of the explosion.
Mr. Mediu rejected the accusations communicated two weeks ago by SPAK, stressing that he was not offered the opportunity for a fair legal process. He was not tried in the open process years ago, because he regained the mandate of the deputy in the next elections, and the prosecution, which had to request the authorization of the parliament again, did not make such a request./VOA
