Recruiting a killer!
Artan Tafani

" Laertes needed killers... ", this sentence, spoken in the courtroom by Artan Tafani , seems to sum up his entire journey in a world where victims were tracked, identified, and then executed, while orders were simply carried out.

At the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime, Tafani appeared as a repentant offender, while as part of the investigation, the Prosecution has filed charges against a structured criminal group allegedly led by Laert Haxhiu.

The repentant man told him that it all started after a short period of freedom, when through old acquaintances he got involved in contacts with people he didn't know well. At first, as he said, everything seemed vague. Short meetings, implied conversations, and a constant feeling that no one was speaking openly.

Tafani testified after a conviction for bank robbery, while in detention, and it was there, according to him, that the first connections were made with people who would lead him to Laert Haxhiu.

In the detention cells, he met Lulzim Arapi and Laert's father. After he was released from prison, it was Lulzim who introduced him to Laert.

"He didn't tell me why he wanted me. The first time we met, I didn't know him and he told me he was Laert Haxhiu. I was scared because I had heard he was involved in murder. He gave me 1,000 euros in my pocket when he left," Tafani recounted his first meeting with the man who would involve him in a world where fear and orders replaced free choice.

Then the meetings increased, trust slowly built, and with it the tasks.

Tafani testified that the first task he was assigned was not a murder, but an act of intimidation: planting TNT in Erion Çoku's apartment because he had problems with payments to Haxhiu.

"The placement of TNT would serve as a signal to scare Erion Çoku into buying goods, such as heroin, from Laert Haxhiu and not giving him the money," said Tafani, according to whom this was not the point that opened his eyes.

Over time, he recounted that he was given increasingly serious tasks, initially as a test of loyalty, then as part of a chain of actions that pushed him ever deeper. One of these moments, he said, was when he engaged in an act of intimidation, which was supposed to serve as a message to others.

But the turning point, as he described it himself, came when he realized that it was no longer about "honor" or warnings, but about human lives.

He was asked to kill Çajup Selimi, an event that occurred on June 1, 2021 in Tepelena, a crime that he describes as part of an organized network where everything was commanded by Laert Haxhiu.

According to the testimony, the murder was presented as an "honor" for a friend of Haxhiu's from Greece.

"I saw that they were taking advantage of me, they were putting me in a trap. If I ran away, they would kill me," said Tafani, who according to him, what made him stay was fear and the way things slowly turned around, without realizing it when he became part of a circle from which he could not easily get out.

He described an atmosphere where no one asked much and where every order was taken as unquestionable.

"No one spoke, we didn't object, whatever he (Laertes) said was done, because there was that fear that he would disappear, he would kill you if you spoke," Tafani confessed, recounting in detail the moment of the former businessman's murder, an event that took place in Tepelena.

"When I arrived at the building where Çajupi lived, I stood near the entrance. At that moment I heard a car that looked like the one he used, a Benz. I saw him approach, and we came face to face. I had put on a COVID mask and a hat so as not to be recognized. He looked at me suspiciously. He entered the building and started to climb up - first to the first floor, then to the second. I followed him, carefully. I knew him well, he was bald and was wearing a red T-shirt that day. I shot him from behind, three times. One of the bullets hit him in the shoulder, I'm not sure where the other two landed. After I shot him, I hurriedly left in the direction of the alley that led me to the Vjosa River, where, according to the plan, Ligori would be waiting for me," Tafani continued his testimony.

For this murder, 50 thousand euros were paid by Erisiano Abedini, of which 25 thousand euros went to Artani and the other 25 to Laerti.

Just one day later, on June 2, 2021, according to him, the group moved towards Korça for another target, Fridman Xhaferraj.

According to the testimony, Xhaferri was an accomplice of Laertes, but since he was not obeying, Laertes wanted to kill him.

"I realized that Laertes needed an assassin. He had hired Fridman Xhaferri for this job, but apparently he didn't do it," said Tafani, according to whom the 26-year-old was planned and executed on Laertes' orders.

According to the story, the victim was taken to an isolated area near a reservoir in Korça, raped and then killed, while the body was thrown into the water to cover the tracks.

The body of 26-year-old Fridman Xhaferi was found in the Gjançi reservoir in Korça on June 13, 2021, while it is not the first time that Artan Tafani has recounted the events in which he was involved, as he received the status of a repentant of justice after testifying to the events in which he was involved together with Laert Haxhiu, Lulzim Arapi or Ligor Romaçka, etc., chronologically showing details of some of the most sensational murders of recent years, from the use of TNT as a form of pressure on Laert Haxhiu's 'enemies', to the murder of a man for 50 thousand euros.

Artan Tafani was arrested in September 2023 after an armed robbery at a currency exchange in the Astir area and later agreed to cooperate with the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK). In his testimony, he has uncovered a significant number of criminal episodes, including several murders and explosive attacks.

According to the charges, Tafani participated in three murders of Çajup Selim, Fridman Xhaferaj and Alban Semaku, who was killed in Peqin on October 17, 2021, as well as attempted murders and several cases of destruction of property with explosives. He is also accused of “blood feud murder”, “providing conditions for murder”, “unlicensed possession of weapons” and “robbery with violence”.

In his testimony, he has revealed at least six murders linked to the group, some of which occurred in Albania and others in Greece, in cities such as Lushnje, Korçë, Elbasan and Tepelena.

On the other hand, Laert Haxhiu is accused by SPAK as the leader of a structured criminal group, involved in a series of serious criminal offenses. According to the prosecution, he faces charges of premeditated murder, blood feud murder, attempted murder, destruction of property with explosives and armed robbery.

Investigations show that the activity of this group extended from April 2021 to May 2023 and is related to violent conflicts with other criminal groups, as well as revenge motives.

Laert Haxhiu was arrested in Greece and extradited to Albania in July 2024. He is currently in court at the GJKKO, while several other people suspected of being part of the criminal group are also involved in the same case./ Shteg
