Albania ranks last in Europe for the quality of sea and lake waters.

According to the 2023 report of the European Environment Agency (EAA), our country has only 30% of excellent quality water.

The list with the best quality of waters where you can bathe in seas or lakes and rivers is headed by Cyprus, Austria, Croatia and Greece.

“Of the 22,081 reported waters in Europe in 2023, around 85% were of excellent quality. In four countries, Cyprus, Austria, Croatia and Greece, 95% or more of the bathing waters were of excellent quality.

In Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Malta, Luxembourg and Romania all waters met at least the minimum quality standard in 2023.

However, in five countries, Albania, Belgium, Estonia, Hungary and Poland, less than 70% of the waters were of excellent quality. One of the main requirements of the WDB was to ensure that all bathing waters were of at least 'adequate' quality by 2015. In the 2023 summer season, this requirement was met by 96% of all waters of the EU", the report states.
