Sports betting is not open! Those who want to try their luck playing online will still have to wait.

"Until the licensing criteria are met; until the companies that will exercise gambling activities are licensed... we cannot say that sports betting is currently legal", said Henri Telharaj, the Albanian Council for Gambling Problems.

After more than two months from the vote in the Parliament of the draft law "On gambling in the Republic of Albania" and the publication of the changes in the Official Journal in mid-March, the Ministry of Finance is still drafting the by-laws. The Gambling Supervision Authority confirms that until now there is no company licensed to practice this activity. 

"All those that have been expressed in the law at the policy level are being completed, now the programs are being drawn up. Programs for licensing companies or those for the protection of players and their families are being drawn up."

And at a time when sports betting, now only "online" is expected to become legal, the number of players addicted to gambling is expanding.

"The situation became worse than before sports betting was physical and players had to go physical. In this 5-year-old while the physical betting points were closed, online betting was added. If before we had 5 thousand betting points, during these 5 years, the number equaled the population. Someone who had an addiction deepened it, and other addicts were added.”

With the approved legal changes, in order to play sports bets "online", citizens will have to register with their identity card on websites or applications licensed for the exercise of this activity.

An electronic registry will also be created that will stop those with addictions or other gambling problems from playing.
