"Lo Zio", the Albanian who had become the terror of Puglia

A voluminous Italian file obtained by Euronews sheds light on a criminal organization based in Barletta, Italy, which according to Antimafia was led by Albanian citizen Igli Kamberi, known by the nicknames “Lo Zio” or “Michele.” Italian authorities consider him the key figure in drug trafficking in the area and the organizer of a mafia execution that shocked the Puglia region.

The document relates to the murder of 26-year-old Francesco Divisti, who disappeared on the evening of April 25, 2025 and was found a few days later murdered and charred in an abandoned quarry in Canosa di Puglia. According to the investigation, the victim was kidnapped in Barletta, transported in a vehicle monitored by the Italian DIA and then executed by gunfire in an isolated area, where his body was burned with tires and fuel to cover his tracks.

At the center of the file is the name of Igli Kamberi, whom the Italian prosecutor describes as the leader of a criminal group that exercised control over drug trafficking in the territory of Barletta. According to investigators, the organization operated with a hierarchical structure and used typical mafia methods to impose control over the territory and intimidate rivals.

Investigations show that the conflict that led to the murder began after a violent fight near the “Cafè Bistrot” in Barletta, between rival groups involved in drug distribution. After the physical conflict, according to the prosecution, Kamberi mobilized his men for a punitive expedition against the rivals.

One of the strongest elements of the case is the environmental wiretaps conducted inside Kamber's apartment. In one of the recordings, he is heard openly expressing anger and vengeful intentions after the conflict, which, according to investigators, indicates premeditation and a commanding role in the organization.

The file also reveals that the investigation had an international dimension and involved a joint Italian-Albanian investigative team. Albanian and Italian authorities have collaborated to monitor the movements and contacts of the individuals involved in the group, indicating that the investigation was considered of particular importance due to the transnational character of the organization.

Another significant element is the fact that the wiretaps recorded Kamberi speaking partly in Albanian during moments of tension after the conflict that preceded the murder. For Italian investigators, this is considered an indicator of strong Albanian connections within the criminal structure.

According to the prosecution, the execution had all the characteristics of a mafia assassination: the victim was taken to a dark and isolated area, shot with two different weapons, and then his body was burned to create terror and send a message of strength to rivals in the drug trade.

Forensic examination confirms that the victim was shot with at least five bullets in the head and chest, while the position of the wounds suggests that he was in a state of physical submission at the time of execution. The body was then placed between car tires and set on fire immediately after death.

Italian authorities point out that the group led by Kamberi used mafia methods to impose control over the territory, spreading fear and silence among residents and local drug dealers. The file mentions a climate of intimidation and silence that accompanied the group's activity, while some witnesses are described as frightened during questioning.

A significant part of the evidence was obtained through wiretaps, GPS devices installed by the Italian DIA, hidden cameras and monitoring of vehicles used by the group. Investigators had installed a GPS device on the vehicle used by the perpetrators just the day before the murder, managing to reconstruct the movements towards the quarry where the body was found.

The file thus describes a criminal organization based in Puglia, with Albanian leadership, involved in drug trafficking, the use of weapons and mafia-like executions, while investigations continue to uncover the group's full connections in Italy and abroad.
