Media freedom/ "Reporters without Borders": Albania has improved,
Reporters Without Borders

Albania has been ranked 80th in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index published by the organization "Reporters Without Borders" (RSF), marking an improvement of 19 places compared to a year ago, when it was ranked 99th out of 180 countries.

Although this progress signals an overall improvement in the media climate, the report highlights that press freedom in Albania remains fragile. RSF underlines that Albanian media still face serious threats from the combination of political and economic interests, an inadequate legal framework and partisan interference in the regulation of the media sector.

Despite the fact that the Constitution and international commitments guarantee freedom of expression, the report highlights shortcomings in the protection of journalists' confidential sources and highlights the high risk for those investigating crime and corruption.

“Journalists reporting on protests or police operations often face violence from the authorities,” the report said, adding that organized crime poses one of the most serious threats to the safety of journalists in the country. While there have been some positive steps by the police to investigate attacks on journalists, the lack of punishment and attempts to politically delegitimize the media have created a climate conducive to further attacks.

In contrast, Kosovo has marked a significant decline in the index, falling to 99th place – below Albania – from 75th place last year and 56th in 2023. This is the largest drop for Kosovo in the last 15 years, marking the second consecutive year of regression in press freedom.
