Their travel documents are considered inauthentic . In October 2021, the world football federation FIFA considered it a victory that it had helped more than 150 people leave Kabul, which fell under the control of the Taliban in August 2021.
At the time, FIFA was under immense public pressure to help save female footballers because they were at risk of being persecuted by the Taliban. Soccer's global governing body expected the entire group, which included athletes and human rights lawyers, to be relocated to Canada because they had obtained what appeared to be Canadian travel documents.
The documents had come from the office of Canadian Senator Marilou McPhedran. But while the help of Mrs. McPhedran enabled the group to leave Afghanistan, they are now unable to make the transatlantic journey from Albania to Canada because the federal government in Ottawa has declared their documents invalid and the matter was referred to the police.
A Canadian government source told local media that 163 Afghans linked to FIFA have been banned from entering Canada after spending a year and a half trapped in an Albanian hotel. The Canadian senator had sent FIFA the documents, the so-called facilitating letters, which were then distributed to the remaining Afghans in Albania. The letters, which included the names of the Afghan refugees, appeared to authorize their entry into Canada.
These Afghans are now trying to appeal to the Federal Court to force the Canadian government to honor the documents and allow them to enter Canada.
FIFA has covered the costs of hosting athletes, related persons and human rights defenders since the arrival of this group of Afghans in Shengjin in November 2021.
FIFA is paying for accommodation, food, healthcare services and security. The group is also receiving counseling support, English lessons and a monthly stipend of US$50 per person. FIFA is working to find another country for the Afghans to relocate to, but there is still no solution.
The Canadian government argues that Senator McPhedran "lacked the authority to issue visas or temporary residence permits in Canada"./ Klan
