Spanish police arrested an Albanian suspected of robbing a jewelry store in a shopping mall in Madrid.

He took jewelry worth 1.2 million euros.

Spanish media write that it is about a famous, intelligent, but also terrifying robber, Shamir Hoxha, Albanian, 42 years old.

Arrested by the Spanish National Police on October 22, 2025.

At the time of his arrest, he was wearing one of the stolen pieces of jewelry and about 3,000 euros in cash.

The theft occurred on April 28, 2025, during a massive power outage that affected much of Spain, leaving stores and security systems without power.

This chaos facilitated the implementation of the plan, as the Plaza Norte 2 shopping center, in San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid), was empty and the electronic protection measures were not working.

Hoxha planned the robbery with precision, taking advantage of the power outage to disable alarms, electronic locks, and anti-theft systems in the windows.

The robbery lasted just 4 minutes, according to security camera footage. Here's a step-by-step description of how he carried it out:

He climbed onto the outer roof of the shopping center and made cuts in the roof right above the José Luis jewelry store, creating a hole for entry.

Internal penetration: After entering the interior, he removed the plasterboard to reach a technical corridor connecting the shops. From there, he made other holes in the walls to reach directly the back of the jewelry store.

He descended from the ceiling to the floor. He opened the windows of the display cases with a simple screwdriver, as the electronic locks were not working due to a lack of power.

He emptied all the display cases, taking 2,200 pieces of jewelry, including an exclusive collection of white gold with diamonds. He stuffed the loot, worth over 1 million euros, into a backpack.

He walked out of the shopping center (he had parked his second-hand car, bought months earlier, away from the cameras).

The next day he fled to Romania, where he abandoned the vehicle. The police tracked him down thanks to this car and his numerous entries and exits to Spain over the following months.

How was it caught?

Spain's National Police launched an in-depth investigation after the robbery, analyzing footage from Plaza Norte 2's security cameras, which recorded the entire event in 4 minutes. Although the power outage disabled many systems, backup cameras captured suspicious movement.

Agents tracked down a second-hand car (parked far away to avoid detection), which Hoxha had purchased a few months before the robbery.

This car was key: he abandoned it in Romania the day after the robbery, but its license plate and recorded movements directly linked it to the crime. In international cooperation with Romanian and Albanian authorities, police monitored his cross-border movements for 6 months.

On October 22, 2025, Hoxha was located and arrested in Madrid by civilian agents. At that moment, he was wearing one of the stolen jewels (a piece of white gold with diamonds) and about 3,000 euros of unclaimed money.

Immediately afterwards, the judge ordered his detention in Soto del Real prison, where he is awaiting trial.

So far, only that jewelry has been recovered; the rest of the loot, worth over 1 million euros, remains missing, although police believe some of it was sold on the Eastern European black market.

Who is Shamir: the profile of a clever robber

Shamir Hoxha has been known to European police forces for years.

Originally from Tirana, Albania, he spent years moving between Spain, Italy and France, always involved in serious economic crimes.

His record includes bank robberies, jewelry trafficking, and sophisticated fraud against technology companies. At 39, his appearance is not very striking, but his reputation as a highly intelligent and methodical individual precedes him.

Several anecdotes about his criminal career have spread in the media and social networks:

In 2021, he reportedly managed to open a safe in Milan using only a stethoscope and a flashlight.

In Paris, in 2023, he left a note on the wall of a robbed jewelry store: "I only take what the insurance returns."

He speaks five languages and usually changes his identity every six months.

His acquaintances say he never uses weapons; he prefers silent movements to violence.

How the robbery was carried out:

The investigation showed that Shamir had been studying the infrastructure of Plaza Norte for weeks.

The power outage, caused by a fault in the main electrical grid, left the entire shopping area without cameras and sensors.

The robber used a small portable generator for lighting and specialized equipment to open the safe door without causing any visible damage.

Special Crimes Unit agents were able to track his movements thanks to exterior camera footage and fingerprints found in a toolbox.

The arrest was made on the outskirts of Madrid, where Shamir was preparing to escape in a car with forged license plates.

So far, police have recovered around 800,000 euros in cash and jewelry; however, some of the jewelry remains missing.

The chief of the police station has publicly admitted that "the planning and execution of the robbery show an unusual level of professionalism within organized crime."/ PeriodistaDigital
