"BBC" reveals the identity of the "king" of dinghies to
Kardo Muhammad Amen Jaf

A BBC News investigation has revealed the true identity of one of the most powerful migrant smugglers, whose network is believed to have organised the majority of illegal dinghy crossings to the UK in recent years.

It concerns a 28-year-old Iraqi Kurd, known by the pseudonym "Kardo Ranya", who for years had evaded arrest by keeping his true identity a secret. According to the investigation, his real name is Kardo Muhammad Amen Jaf.

BBC journalists managed to trace his activity from migrant camps in northern France to Iraqi Kurdistan, using contacts in the world of migrant smuggling.

According to British authorities, his network operated on a route that stretched from Afghanistan to Britain. Officials from the British National Crime Agency (NCA) stated that much of the criminal pattern of raft crossings is controlled by Kurdish groups linked to the Ranyas region in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The investigation reveals that "Kardo Ranya" also promoted his activity on social networks, where he published videos promising a luxurious life in London and testimonies of immigrants who had successfully arrived in Britain.

According to a former smuggler, the network demanded up to €17,000 to transport a migrant from Iraq to Britain, claiming to offer a safer route and "VIP" service.

However, the journeys have often proved fatal. The BBC reports on the case of a 24-year-old from Ranya, named Shwana, who disappeared during a crossing of the English Channel after the dinghy carrying more than 100 people began to sink. His body was never found.

His family said he had been influenced by smugglers' advertisements promising a better life in Britain.

During the investigation, journalists contacted Jaf directly via WhatsApp, posing as migrants interested in traveling to Britain. One of his associates offered a “VIP” package for 160,000 pounds for an entire family.

When confronted with the charges, Jaf denied being a smuggler and claimed he was only giving people advice on how to leave Iraq. He also denied involvement in the tragedy that killed young Shwana.

According to the BBC, one of his associates, Noah Aaron, was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison in France for organizing illegal immigration and money laundering.

Currently, Kardo Muhammad Amen Jaf is wanted for questioning by at least one European police force, while his whereabouts remain unknown.
