Andrea Butti is today one of the key leaders of Lega Serie A, where he holds the role of Head of Competitions and Operations, responsible for the organization and calendaring of the championship. His name has also appeared in recent hours in the context of the investigation into the refereeing system, coordinated by prosecutor Maurizio Ascione: he will be heard by investigators as a "person informed of the facts".
Why has Andrea Butti been called in for the investigation into referees?
Andrea Butti's summons by the Public Prosecutor's Office is linked to his operational role within Lega Serie A, where he is the main point of contact with the referee designator. As head of competitions, he also manages the organizational and logistical aspects of matches, maintaining constant contact with the refereeing structure.
Among the activities he has been involved in are the Italian Super Cup editions held in Saudi Arabia, during which he coordinated with Gianluca Rocchi on procedures related to visas and referee movements. Another important node is the VAR Center in Lissone, a facility owned by the Lega, which represents a possible point of telephone contact between Butti and Rocchi, revealed during the wiretaps.
A new phase of the investigation opens
Thus opens a second phase of the investigation led by prosecutor Maurizio Ascione, who in recent months has heard from many representatives of the world of arbitration and is now expanding the scope to other figures in Serie A. In the coming days, club referee managers of elite teams will also be heard.
Among the names under scrutiny is Giorgio Schenone, responsible for referees at Inter. His name has already appeared in the investigation files: one of the wiretaps mentions a conversation between Rocchi and former VAR supervisor Andrea Gervasoni for "Giorgio", regarding some sensitive assignments.
Who is Andrea Butti, from FIGC to Inter to Lega Calcio
A graduate in Economics at Bocconi, Andrea Butti took his first steps in the world of football by collaborating with the FIGC press office during the Euro 2004 qualifiers. The main part of his career is linked to Inter, where he worked for more than a decade, from 2002 to 2013.
At the Bianconeri he started in the communications sector, then took on increasingly operational roles: from managing the Appiano Gentile training center to the role of team manager of the first team between 2007 and 2012. In those years he collaborated with coaches such as Roberto Mancini, José Mourinho, Rafael Benítez, Leonardo, Gian Piero Gasperini, Claudio Ranieri and Andrea Stramaccioni, also being a protagonist in the 2010 Triplet season.
Today, in his role at Lega, he is among the main architects of the construction of calendars and operational management of Serie A, which makes his position important also in the context of the ongoing investigations into the refereeing issue.
