A major scandal has rocked Italian football, with Gianluca Rocchi, the referee selector for Serie A and B, under investigation by the Milan Prosecutor's Office for "participation in sports fraud".

The accusations weigh heavily on him and the VAR supervisor, Andrea Gervasoni, with suspicion of having exerted pressure on referees to favor certain clubs, especially Inter.

Rocchi has taken the step of self-suspending himself from duty, while he is expected to face investigators to give his version of the facts.

The investigation, which began with the denunciation of a former assistant, Domenico Rocca, has expanded to include wiretaps and verifications for several key matches of the last and current season, such as Bologna-Inter or the Coppa Italia derby between Inter and Milan.

While the FIGC Federal Prosecutor's Office has officially requested the file to reopen the sporting process, further developments are expected that could bring severe penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines for the people involved.

At the moment, the Inter club is not directly involved through its officials, but the shadow of doubt over the referee appointments remains a strong blow to the integrity of the competition.
