A court in Barcelona ruled that Dani Alves can be released from prison after serving about a quarter of his sentence for rape. The former Barcelona and Brazil footballer, who was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison last month, will be released in exchange for a bail of 1 million euros.

Before the sentence he was held in custody since January 2023. According to the BBC, the conditions of his release include surrendering both his Brazilian and Spanish passports. He must also appear in court every week. The court also imposed a protection order, which prohibits the former footballer from approaching the 23-year-old he abused.

Alves' lawyer based the request for his client's release from prison on the fact that he had served a quarter of his sentence while in custody. The decision, which was not unanimous due to one of the judges voting against it, can be appealed.

During the trial, prosecutors said Alves and his friends had bought champagne for three young women before the ex-footballer lured one of them to the VIP area of ​​a nightclub with a toilet she was unaware of. . They got into a fight at which point the fight turned violent and Alves forced the 23-year-old to have sex despite her repeated requests to leave.

Alves claimed she could have left if she wanted to. However, the court came to the conclusion that the act was done against the girl's will. In a statement, the court said there was evidence other than the victim's testimony that she was raped. The court heard that Alves had forcibly grabbed the young woman and thrown her to the ground, holding her down to prevent her from moving, while the 23-year-old objected.

Alves himself changed his testimony several times. At first he denied that he knew the girl in question, then he stated that he had met her in the toilet, but he denied that anything had happened between them. Then he said that they had consensual sexual relations.

Alves played more than 400 times for Barcelona, ​​winning 6 Spanish league titles and 3 Champions Leagues. He was also part of Brazil's 2022 World Cup squad.
